Niwaki Gardening Gloves - Medium

  • £8.95

The ideal gardening glove for when you need a bit of sensitivity and to feel what you’re doing. The nylon/spandex liner is breathable, the nitrile coating is grippy but not too grippy, and the fit of the fingers and cuffs is just right. Perfect for pruning, planting, working in the borders, potting up in the greenhouse, and any other chores around the home and garden. Less good for ripping out brambles.

The cuff colours, and the funky Japanese kanji, are non-negotiable. Don’t, for goodness sake, get the small ones because you like the purple, or the shape of 七. Get them because you’re size 7.

Measure across the middle of your hand (at the metacarpophalangeal joints, obviously) in cm to find your size. 7cm = Size 7 (Small), 8cm = Size 8 (Medium) etc.) We recommend moving up a size if you’re caught in the middle, although some people prefer a tighter fit.

Niwaki means garden tree. Not very exciting, but it implies far more than that. Japanese gardens are landscapes, microcosms of nature, and the trees are all shaped to fit into those landscapes. In 1997, Niwaki's founder Jake went to Japan as a wannabe sculptor, to investigate the cultural phenomenon of the cherry blossom season, Hanami. There he discovered the gardens, the trees and later, how fabulous their tools are.
